Vertically Diamond Sword is tied to the Y -64 to 16, peaks at Y -59 range, which is the band to dig in rather than wandering at random depths for Diamond Sword. Requires only 2 diamonds compared to 3 for a pickaxe, so prioritize the pickaxe first. Strip mine at Y -59 for diamonds, then craft the sword. The main non-crafting route to Diamond Sword is looting it from generated structure chests.

The most reliable way to get Diamond Sword is to craft it at a Crafting Table from Diamond and Stick: 2 ingredients, a fixed grid, and no luck involved anywhere.
